Gorilla trekking in Rwanda takes place inside Volcanoes National Parka 160-square-kilometre protected area in the far northwest of the country. The park forms the Rwandan section of the Virunga Conservation Area, a transboundary forest shared between Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. The mountain gorillas live on the forested slopes of eight volcanoes, including Karisimbi at 4,507 metres and Bisoke at 3,711 metres.

Beyond the Gorillas

Volcanoes National Park offers more than gorilla trekking, and it would be a shame to leave without taking advantage of some of it. Rwanda is a country that rewards the well-prepared traveller. It is small barely the size of the state of Maryland but what it holds inside its borders is one of the most extraordinary wildlife encounters left on this planet. The mountain gorilla. Fewer than 1,100 individuals survive in the wild, and almost half of them live in the forests of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda’s far northwest.

This guide exists because the difference between a good gorilla trek and a genuinely life changing one is almost entirely about planning. The right season, the right place to sleep, a clear understanding of where you are and what to expect these things do not happen by accident.

Understanding Rwanda’s Seasons

Rwandastraddles the equator, which means the familiar idea of summer and winter simply does not apply here. What you get instead are two dry seasons and two wet seasons cycling through the year each with its own character, its own trail conditions, and its own relationship with a mountain gorilla trek.

The gorillas are there year-round. The question is what kind of experience you want to have getting to them.

The Four Windows at a Glance

June to September

From June to the end of September, there is the long dry season.During this time, almost everything works out for you. In Volcanoes National Park, the roads are hard to walk on. In the morning, the sky is clear.

Following their own instincts, the gorilla families tend to live at lower elevations on the volcano slopes. This means that the average trek takes less time sometimes you can be sitting in the bushes six meters away watching a silverback pull leaves from a hagenia tree after only an hour of hiking.

When it’s dry, the light is perfect for taking pictures. There are a few less dense branches in the sky than after it rains. This means that beams of light cut through to the forest floor at angles that make pictures of gorillas look like paintings.

On a normal morning, the temperature at altitude is between 10 and 18⁰ C. It’s cool enough to go climbing, but warm enough that you can take off your jacket once the forest warms up.

Note: July and August are the busiest months because they are summer vacation months in the northern hemisphere. Permits quickly run out because each gorilla family can only get a few per day. Start making reservations twelve months in advance, not three, if these are your months.

December to February

The short dry season is a genuine secret that too few travellers take advantage of. The rains have cleared, the forest is still lush and green from October’s showers, and the trails are in excellent condition. January and February in particular offer some of the best trekking of the year with clear skies, reasonable permit availability, and lodges that have not yet changed their rates back to peak season levels. If you have flexibility, this is the window to target.

December behaves differently depending on where you are in the month. The first two weeks can still see lingering short rains from November. From mid-December onwards, conditions improve rapidly. The Christmas and New Year period is busy with holiday travellers, so if you are targeting December, aim for the final week of the month rather than the middle.

October and November

The short rains return in October and bring with them a forest that turns an almost electric shade of green. The trails get slippery and the hiking requires more care, but for fit travellers willing to embrace mud-spattered boots and occasional downpours, this period offers something the dry season cannot: genuine dramatic atmosphere. Mist hangs in the valleys between the volcanoes. Waterfalls run full. The forest sounds completely different in the rain.

Note: Lodge rates begin to soften in October as operators try to fill rooms outside the peak window. Permitavailability is better than in high season. If you are drawn to the idea of a wilder, less polished experience and your hiking boots have seen some miles before, October and November are worth serious consideration.

March to May

The long-wet season is Rwanda’s most challenging trekking period and its most heavily discounted one. Heavy rain falls consistently from March through May. The trails become genuinely arduous steep, slippery, and often blocked by swollen streams. Photography is harder in low, grey light.

And yet. Serious trekkers who have done it in April describe the experience in language that sounds different from the dry-season accounts. The forest is completely alive. The solitude is total you may be the only non-ranger humans in your section of the park for hours. Lodge prices drop by 30 to 50 percent. Permits are genuinely available. If the physical challenge does not deter you and the budget matters, the long rains have a rough, unforgettable beauty of their own.

A note on February: it is consistently underrated. Dry conditions, manageable permits, green scenery, and lodge rates that have not yet hit their June peaks. If February is possible for you, take it seriously.

A note on April: do not write it off simply because it is the wettest month. The gorillas are still there. The experience is still extraordinary. It is just harder to reach. Some people prefer hard.

Accommodation

In Rwanda, most of the places to stay are in and around Musanze, which is the main town and about 90 minutes north of Kigali.The Kinigi area is right on the park’s edge. During your trekking trip, where you sleep is more important. Before going on a gorilla trek, there is a briefing at the park offices at 7:00 AM. Being close means you are ready and rested, not tired from a move that started early. There is less of a morning drive and more time to sleep if you stay close to the park.

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge is arguably the most interesting place to stay in the entire region. Eight stone cottages built and run by the African Wildlife Foundation, with every dollar of revenue flowing directly into the local community trust that owns the land. The experience is warm, personal, and unpretentious a far cry from the polished luxury of the park boundary properties but deeply connected to the local community in a way that adds real meaning to the visit. The firepit evenings, sharing stories with other trekkers, are some of the most genuinely memorable moments you will have in Rwanda.

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge

Mountain Gorilla View Lodge is the most established property in the area, with thirty-two rooms and a reliable, consistent operation. The terrace views of the Virunga volcanoes are exceptional, and the pool rare at this altitude makes for a good post-trek recovery. Families and groups that need more logistical predictability tend to gravitate here.

 How to get there

The Drive from Kigali

The road north from Kigali to Musanze is one of the great scenic drives in East Africa. You leave the capital climbing steadily through terraced hills and banana groves, passing tea plantations and small market towns, before the Virunga volcanoesbegin to fill the windscreen ahead of you massive, green, and closer than you expect. Most travellers make this transfer on the afternoon before their trek, arriving in Musanze or Kinigi in time for a decent dinner and an early sleep. From Musanze to Kinigi park headquarters takes roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The road is paved and in reasonable condition year-round.

What Nobody Tells You

Book Your Permit Early — Very Early

The Rwanda Development Boardlimits permits strictly to protect the gorillas from over-exposure. Each gorilla family receives a small number of visitors per day, and no exceptions are made.

For the June to September peak season, begin the booking process twelve months ahead. For January to February, six months is usually sufficient. For the wet season months, three months will generally do it but do not gamble. Permits are booked via the RDB directly or through a licensed tour operator, many of whom hold allocations.

Physical Preparation Is Not Optional

Gorilla trekkingtakes place at altitude between 2,400 and 4,000 metres above sea level through terrain that ranges from steep to very steep. The trek can last anywhere from one to eight hours depending entirely on where the gorilla family has ranged that day. There is no way to know in advance. You could be back at the vehicle in ninety minutes, or you could be deep in the forest as the afternoon light changes. Build your cardiovascular fitness in the four to six weeks before you travel. Your future self will be grateful.

Local portersare available at the park gates for a fixed fee of around 15 to 25 US dollars, paid directly to them. They carry your daypack, steady you on steep descents, and know the terrain in a way that no first-time visitor ever will. The fee goes directly to the local community, contributing to the economic case for gorilla conservation. It is one of the most worthwhile small decisions you will make on this trip.

Rwanda has rebuilt itself into one of the safest, cleanest, and most extraordinary travel destinations in Africa. Kigali regularly tops rankings for livability and safety on the continent. The roads are good. The systems work. The people are genuinely warm toward visitors who come with respect.
