Golden Monkey Trekking in Mgahinga National Park.
If you are looking for a rare and exciting wildlife experience in Uganda, golden monkey trekking in Mgahinga National Park is something you must try. These beautiful, playful monkeys are hard to find anywhere else in the world and Uganda gives you one of the best chances to see them up close.
What Is Golden Monkey Trekking.
Golden monkey trekkingis a guided walk through the thick bamboo forest of the Virunga Mountains in search of wild golden monkeys. You walk with an experienced park guide who helps you find a habituated group meaning a group that is already used to seeing people. Once you find them, you spend one full hour watching them jump, play, eat, and interact in their natural home.
Where Can You See Golden Monkeys in Uganda.
Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is the only place in Uganda where you can go golden monkey trekking. The park sits in the far south-western part of Uganda, in Kisoro District, right at the edge of the Virunga Volcanoes. Golden monkeys are also found in Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park and in parts of the Democratic Republic of Congo, but Uganda is widely considered the best place to track them and it costs much less.

One hour with the golden monkey family

What Is the Golden Monkey Habituation Experience.
If you want to spend more than one hour with the golden monkeys. You can book a Golden Monkey Habituation Experience. This gives you up to four hours with the primates, alongside researchers and expert trackers. It is a deeper, more personal experience for those who truly want to understand these amazing animals.
Best Time to Go Golden Monkey Trekking.
You can go golden monkey trekking all year round, but the best months are:
June to September (long dry season)
December to February (short dry season)
During these dry months, the forest trails are easier to walk, the vegetation is thinner so you can see better, and the weather is more comfortable.
The rainy season (March–May and October–November) makes trails muddy and slippery, but the forest is very green and beautiful.
Note: Book your permits2 to 4 months in advance, especially during peak season. Permits sell out fast, particularly from June to September.
How Long Does the Trek Take.
The trek usually takes between 2 to 4 hours from start to finish. Finding the monkeys can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 3 hours, depending on where they have moved in the forest. Golden monkeysare smaller than gorillas and do not leave clear signs of where they slept the night before, so the guide looks for fresh bamboo shoots and leaves they have been eating.
Once the group is found, you get exactly one hour with them.
How Many Golden Monkeys Are There.
Golden monkey groups in Mgahinga can have between 80 and 200 individuals, led by an alpha male. There are only an estimated 3,000 to 4,000 golden monkeys left in the world, making them an endangered species. By buying a permit, you directly support their conservation and protection.
