Night walks in Nyungwe National Park.

Deep in the south-western corner of Rwanda, straddling mist-cloaked mountains at the border of the Congo Basin and the Nile headwaters, lies one of Africa’s greatest living treasures. Nyungwe National Park protects approximately 1,015 square kilometers of ancient montane rainforest — a biodiversity hotspot so rich it is said to harbor 12% of all mainland Africa’s primate species in a single forest.
By day, Nyungwe is spectacular. By night, it is utterly transformed. Chimpanzee calls fade into silence, and in their place rises an orchestra of cicadas, tree frogs, and calling nightjars. Eyes you never noticed during daylight small, round, luminous blink open in the torchlight. This is the world the Night Walking Safari was designed to reveal.
Introduced as one of Nyungwe’s newest experiences, the guided night walk departs daily at 5:30 pm from the Uwinka Visitor Centre and lasts between one and three hours. As you set out, you can still catch the last blush of sunset filtering through the canopy — then, gradually, the forest shifts into its nocturnal rhythm around you.

Armed with flashlights and spotlights provided by your ranger guide, the forest reveals creatures that spend daylight hours tucked away in hollow trunks and dense foliage. Here is what to keep your torch beam ready for:

Bush Babies (Galagos)
Wide-eyed, acrobatic primates whose reflective eyes catch torchlight like tiny lanterns in the canopy.

Pottos
Slow-moving, bear-like primates that cling motionless to branches easy to miss unless your guide knows where to look.

Chameleons
Several species shift and glitter in the spotlight, clinging to low vegetation along the trail edges.

Owls & Nightjars
The Ruwenzori Nightjar is particularly special an Albertine Rift endemic heard and sometimes seen on night walks.

Anomalures
Known as scaly-tailed flying squirrels, these remarkable gliders move between the giant trees after dark.

Frogs & Insects
Chorus frogs, fireflies, spectacular moths the invertebrate life alone makes the walk worthwhile.

Tree Hyraxes
Their haunting, piercing screams echoing through the night are one of Nyungwe’s most unforgettable sounds.

Fireflies
Dozens of bioluminescent beetles weave through the undergrowth, giving the forest floor a magical, fairy-light quality.
Beyond individual wildlife encounters, the experience itself is worth savoring. The air hangs cool and damp, scented with leaf litter and crushed ferns.
The 60-metre-high canopy blocks out stars above, but fireflies below provide their own constellation. Your guide, typically a trained Nyungwe park ranger, will narrate the ecological story unfolding around you pointing out the calls of frogs, the silk threads of forest spiders, the feeding marks left on bark by nocturnal rodents.

The Best Time to Visit

Nyungwe’s position on the Albertine Rift means it receives rainfall year-round but timing your visit intelligently makes a meaningful difference to comfort and wildlife visibility.

Dry Season

June, July, August, September and also December through February. Lower rainfall, drier trails, and cooler nights make conditions ideal for the night walk. Nocturnal animals such as bush babies, owls, and chameleons are more reliably spotted when the forest floor is not drenched.

Wet Season

March to May and October to November. The forest is intensely lush and birdsong is extraordinary, but trails can be muddy and slippery underfoot. Waterproof boots and good rain gear are essential. Frog activity actually peaks during the rains a bonus for nature enthusiasts.
Temperatures at night drop to around 10°C (50°F) even in the warmer months, so a warm layer is recommended regardless of the season you travel. The park sits at high altitude, and the cool mist rolling off Lake Kivu intensifies that chill once the sun goes down.

Rules of the Night Walk

Your ranger guide will deliver a full safety briefing before departure, but a few golden principles apply universally: keep your voice low to avoid startling nocturnal animals; never shine a spotlight directly into an animal’s eyes; do not touch or disturb wildlife; stay on designated trails; and follow all instructions from your guide immediately and without question. Nyungwe’s trails are wild the rules exist to protect both you and the ecosystem.

Combining the Night Walk with Other Activities

The night walk pairs beautifully with Nyungwe’s daytime offerings. Many visitors structure their stay around a full-spectrum experience of the park:

Chimpanzee Trekking: begins at 5:00 am and takes you into the forest with three semi-habituated chimpanzee communities (Cyamudongo, Maybe, and Gisovu). After a morning with the chimps, an afternoon rest, and a late lunch, you’re perfectly positioned for the 5:30 pm night walk departure.

The Canopy Walk :Enjoy a canopy walk a suspended bridge 60 metros above the forest floor — offers a thrilling daytime counterpart to the ground-level perspective of the night walk. A 7:00 pm canopy walk slot is also available, providing a twilight experience as the forest transitions from day to night.
