Overview

Lying in the far northwest of Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park is a paradise inhabiting the steep slopes of the magnificent Virunga range. The park’s summits encompass five of East Africa’s dormant volcanoes — Mount Karisimbi, Mount Sabinyo, Mount Gahinga, Mount Muhabura, and Mount Bisoke — extending from sea level up to 4,507 metres high. The park occupies 160 square kilometres in northwestern Rwanda, forming part of the larger Virunga Conservation Area that extends into Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Known in French as Parc National des Volcans, it is widely regarded as the premier gorilla trekking destination on the planet.

🦍 Mountain Gorilla Trekking — The Jewel in the Crown

The single greatest draw to Volcanoes National Park is undeniably the mountain gorilla. Roughly half of the world’s wild population of mountain gorillas is resident on the Rwandan slopes of the Virungas, and visiting them in their natural habitat is one of the most thrilling and memorable wildlife experiences on Earth.

Gorilla tracking tours in Volcanoes National Park lead visitors to the park’s 12 habituated gorilla groups, including Susa, Amahoro, Sabyinyo, Agashya, Umubano, and Kwitonda, among others.

Only 96 permits are available daily — eight visitors for each of the twelve habituated families — creating high demand that often results in sold-out dates months ahead. Gorilla permits in Rwanda cost $1,500 per person, and regulations during treks are strict and enforced by rangers, with visitors required to maintain a seven-metre distance from the gorillas, though the gorillas sometimes approach closer on their own initiative.

🐒 Golden Monkey Tracking

Golden monkeys are a subspecies of the blue monkey native to the Virunga Massif, and their population has over the years reduced due to loss of their limited habitat and civil conflicts in the region. Unlike gorilla trekking, tracking golden monkeys in the park is much cheaper and more convenient, though both activities follow the same regulations. This makes golden monkey tracking a fantastic complementary experience for visitors.

🌋 Volcano Hiking

The landscape consists of five volcanic peaks within Rwanda’s borders: Karisimbi (4,507 m), Bisoke (3,711 m), Sabyinyo (3,669 m), Gahinga (3,474 m), and Muhabura (4,127 m). These dormant and extinct volcanoes create a dramatic backdrop for wildlife viewing, with their slopes covered in montane and bamboo forests. Hikers can summit these peaks for breathtaking panoramic views stretching across Rwanda, Uganda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The park is home to over 200 bird species, including the Rwenzori Turaco and Shoebill bird, and depending on the luck of the birdwatcher, visitors are bound to see varieties of colourful and rare birds flying around the park. 🏛️ The Dian Fossey Legacy

The park’s history is closely linked to the efforts of American primatologist Dian Fossey, who founded the Karisoke Research Center within its boundaries in 1967. Fossey devoted her life to studying and protecting mountain gorillas from poaching and habitat loss. The tomb of Dian Fossey lies at Karisoke Research Centre within Volcanoes National Park, where travellers pay regular tribute to this great conservationist. Fossey was killed in 1985 by poachers while carrying out her primary work of protecting mountain gorillas. Hiking to her grave is one of the most moving and historically rich experiences in the park.

🗓️ Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit runs from June through September and December through February, when trails are drier and more accessible. However, the park attracts visitors all year round, and the wet season offers its own rewards — lush green landscapes and excellent birdwatching conditions.
