The Mgahinga Gorilla National Park is located in the extreme southwest of Uganda. The park is the known to be the smallest in the countries with the size of 33.7 sq. km. Despite its size the park offers an extraordinary experiences to the visitors. Mgahinga is made up of mist-covered volcanoes, bamboo forests, and rare wildlife. It is also part of the greater Virunga Mountains a chain of eight ancient volcanoes covering three countries that is Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mgahinga forms part of the same ecosystem as Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, another world-renowned gorilla destination, but Mgahinga typically offers a quieter, more intimate trekking experience.

Gorilla Trekking.

Mgahinga is home to one habituated gorilla family that is Nyakagezi. Unlike some other Virunga regions where gorillas move across borders, Nyakagezi group has remained consistently within Mgahinga. Hence making sightings highly reliable thought out the year.

The Trekking Experience.

The trek starts early in the morning with a briefing by rangers at the park headquarters. Here you’ll learn about gorilla behaviour, trekking rules, and safety guidelines before heading into the forest.

 What to Expect during the trek.

Time taken during the trek depends on gorilla location and this ranges from 2 to 6 hours.

One hour allowed with the gorillas after finding them.

Moderate to challenging hiking conditions

Golden Monkey Tracking.

Mgahinga National park is the only park where golden monkey trekking is in Uganda. These monkeys are famous for their golden-orange fur patches and playful nature. Golden monkey tracking takes place in the bamboo zones at the lower slopes of the volcanoes.

Note: Golden monkey tracking experience is not that different from gorilla trekking. However the permit prices differ.

There is also a golden monkey habituation experience, which allows for extended time (4 to 6 hours) observing these fascinating animals.

The park is also home to three extinct volcanoes each offering a unique hiking experience.

Mount Sabyinyo (3,669m)

Mount Sabyinyo is often referred to as the “Old Man’s Teeth” due to its jagged peaks. And it offers an adventurous and thrilling hike to the visitors. Sabyinyo offers Challenging that takes about 7–9 hours to complete and it’s a tri-border summit experience. There are wooden stairs and steep ridges that lead to a peak where you may stand in three nations at once: Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Mount Gahinga (3,474m)

The most accessible volcano hike, Mount Gahinga offers a gentler ascent through bamboo forests and swampy terrain. At the summit, you’ll find a beautiful crater swamp. Gahinga offers a moderate that takes about 5–7 hours to complete and scenic bamboo forest trails

Mount Muhabura (4,127m)

Mount Muhabura tallest of the three and it is the most demanding hike. The steep climb rewards adventurers with panoramic views of the Virunga chain and a stunning crater lake at the summit. Muhabura is a Strenuous hike that about 8–10 hours to complete with Breathtaking summit views

Batwa Cultural Trail

The Batwa people lived as hunter-gatherers in these woodlands before conservation efforts made the park in 1991. The Batwa Cultural Trail is a guided tour lead by Batwa community members who explain their traditional methods for surviving in the forest, as well as their knowledge of medicinal plants, music, dance, and stories.
